The New York Immigration Coalition is hosting asylum clinics every Wednesday at the University at Albany, Downtown Campus. We are seeking volunteers virtually or in-person to either translate documents for asylum applicants or provide support in filling out applicants' asylum applications on Wednesday, May 8th. We would love your volunteer support to ensure these asylum applications are completed!
VOLUNTEER ROLES:
Asylum Application Volunteers (virtual or in person) - Volunteers will fill out the I-589 form by asking for their personally identifying information, spouse/children information, and background information, or show whether the persecution the applicant suffered or fear has a tie to at least one of the five grounds (race, nationality, religion, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion). An attorney will be present at all times for questions and to review the form.
- 9 am - 1 pm (Morning shift)
- 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm (Afternoon shift)
- 9 am - 3 pm (All day shift)
Requirement: Volunteers must be comfortable using a computer
**Please be advised that Asylum cases can be story-heavy. There will be stories that focus on the applicant's persecution based on their race, nationality, religion, gender, etc.**
Document Translation (virtual or in person) - Volunteers must be fluent in Spanish to translate documents from Spanish to English.
