Come help build a food forest in Albany! On Saturday April 16th, The Radix Center will be having a volunteer food tree planting event where we will be planting 25 mature apples, pears, hickories, and black walnuts on the sidewalks outside of Radix along Warren Street and the surrounding blocks. The food grown on these public trees will be available for free to local residents.
These plantings are being undertaken with the guidance and support of the City of Albany.
If you are interested in participating, please arrive at the Radix Center (153 Grand Street) at 10 AM for a tree planting training and demonstration. We will continue working until 2PM or until all the trees have been planted.
This planting will be the first of two scheduled for this spring (with a second sometime in early May, precise date TBD). It is part of the South End Biocultural Diversity Forest program, a Radix program funded by the NYSDEC Community and Urban Forestry program and by a HUD Community Block Development Grant. By planting more trees in the neighborhood at no cost to residents, we hope to address systemic inequality, reduce urban heat island temperatures, improve air quality, increase local food sovereignty, enhance biodiversity, and bolster the resilience of Albany's urban forest.
If you are interested in attending the planting, or for more information, please send a confirmation email to Scott Kellogg at sk@radixcenter.org
