Volunteer: Environmental Education InternshipAre you passionate about nature? Eager to pass that love on to others? Then an Environmental Education Internship may be for you! The Albany Pine Bush Environmental Education Internship is a volunteer seasonal program. We offer a 10-week program in both spring and fall with a minimum requirement of 40 hours per semester. We also offer a 12-week full time summer position, 37.5 hours per week. There is a Friends of the Pine Bush Community internship stipend upon completed requirements. Housing available. The Albany Pine Bush Education Intern represents the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission in many different facets. This position requires interaction with people of all ages in a variety of settings in an interpretive capacity. Interns must possess an interest in the ecology of the Albany Pine Bush, environmental education/interpretation and an enthusiastic attitude. Experience as an educator or with public speaking is helpful but not required. Training will be provided. Intern Responsibilities The primary responsibility of the Albany Pine Bush Education Intern is to promote a greater public awareness and appreciation for the Albany Pine Bush through education. Interns lead interpretive walks, interact with preserve and Discovery Center visitors in an educational capacity, travel to local schools, colleges and businesses to promote awareness and understanding of the ecology and management of the Pine Bush, participate in public interpretive programs, assist with the development of school programs and presentations, participate in outreach events, and aid in the production of educational literature specific to the Pine Bush. Interns may also have the option of participating in other Preserve activities including native plant seed collection, invasive species control, trail maintenance, prescribed fire training, science research and animal handling and care.Requirements Excellent interpersonal skills and a positive, enthusiastic attitude. Background or interest in the natural sciences and the ability to use field identification guides, willingness to learn, and a strong interest in the ecology, history and management of this local area. Excellent writing skills. Ability to effectively communicate with people of all ages in an interpretive capacity. Work requires minor physical exertion and infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements. Experience in working as an educator, or with public speaking preferred but not required.
