Athletic Haven has many projects that could use a clerical eye. Including, but not limited to, data entry, filing, letter writing and organizational tasks.

Athletic Haven is a volunteer-based non-profit organization created to support youth athletes in New York’s Capital Region. Founded in 2016 by area coach Scott McIntyre, the organization offers low-cost camps, open gyms, coaching and training opportunities.

Through its Awareness Athletics program, it also provides opportunities for youth athletes to participate in area travel teams. In exchange, participants are expected to pay-it-forward and raise funds for local charities.  

Our mission is to provide a philanthropic outlet through community events and athletics to help meet the financial and emotional needs of aspiring young student-athletes.

Athletic Haven has also established the tsm Fund and grants scholarships annually to athletes who display outstanding sportsmanship in memory of McIntyre’s son, Tyler, who passed away in 2012.

It’s our duty to do our diligence and find out the facts! We support many campaigns in the capital region but we are also building our own. Help our team do the research on social justice, food insecurity, restorative justice and more.

**Position Overview:**
The Volunteer Data Research Assistant will play a crucial role in supporting our nonprofit’s mission by assisting with data collection, analysis, and reporting. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about data, research, and making a positive impact in the community.

**Key Responsibilities:**
- Assist in the collection and organization of data relevant to the organization’s projects and initiatives.
- Conduct literature reviews and summarize findings on relevant topics.
- Analyze data using statistical software and tools.
- Prepare reports and visual presentations of data findings for internal and external stakeholders.
- Collaborate with team members to identify research needs and develop methodologies.
- Maintain accurate records of research activities and findings.

The Wizard’s Wardrobe is a free one-on-one, after-school tutoring program for  elementary students in the South End of Albany. Our focus is on reading and writing skills, along with problem solving, which is nurtured with our monthly STEM challenges. These challenges help build perseverance and grit and encourage risk-taking.

Our trained volunteer tutors welcome the children into a safe space, with an imaginative theme. Our library has over 2,700 books in order for tutors to help students find ones of interest on their reading level, as well as books that tutors can read to them to increase their listening vocabularies.

Once accepted into the program, students are welcome to continue through elementary school. We work to complement and enhance their experiences in school to raise their academic standings.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who loves children, has a can-do attitude and is ready to strengthen a young student’s possibilities.

As one tutor said of her student, “my job is to help her believe in herself and what she can accomplish.”

Tutors must complete a two-day training before being assigned a student. Our last training for the 2024-25 school year will be Jan. 11 & 18, 2025.

We ask tutors to make a commitment for a full school year. Building a relationship with the student is of primary importance. It is this relationship that research tells us allows the student to make great progress. Many of our tutors have worked with their students for several years.

Currently we have a waiting list of students. We need tutors in order to enroll students. Your volunteering with us is essential. Students come twice a week for one and a half hours each time. Tutors commit to one or two afternoons a week. If twice, the student will have only that one tutor.  If once, the tutor will share the student with another tutor. Tutors participate in a 15-hour training course.

Our children come at various times, depending on which school they attend. The program is open from 1:00 - 5:30 PM, Monday-Thursday with 2 tutoring slots (2:45-4:15; 3:45-5:15). It is also open on Friday, 2:00-5:30.

Positions available Monday to Friday from 10am until 2pm. Assist shoppers, help donors with processing the drop-off of clothing items, hanging and folding of clothing. Light housekeeping duties as needed.

▪ Under the teacher's supervision, work one one-on-one or in small groups with adult students.

Volunteers will assist in packing each BackPack and then deliver the bags to the student's home in Cohoes. Other tasks that we may ask people to help with include breaking down boxes we receive and moving our overstock inventory to ensure that we are following a "first in, first out" system with the food we receive.

There are two available Friday shifts for interested BackPack volunteers:
From 7:30 to 8:30 am, we package dry goods and produce
From 8:30 to 9:00 am, volunteer drivers deliver a route of 3-5 BackPacks to homes in Cohoes (Vehicle needed)

Conversation Club provides opportunities for refugees and immigrants to practice their conversation skills.  It is a drop-in neighborhood session open to the public.  Conversation starters are provided for volunteers to break up into smaller groups to facilitate discussion.  It is a low-stress, fun way to meet our new neighbors.  

RISSE offers 4 levels of  English as a New Language instruction to adult refugees and immigrants.  In-person volunteers provide one-on-one or small group tutoring to adult students.  Online training is provided and required.  Volunteer as little as one hour a week.  RISSE requests a 3 month minimum volunteer commitment.

Classes meet mornings and afternoons; various volunteer times are available.

Do you enjoy working outdoors? RISSE needs help maintaining plantings and gardens around the property.  Mowing, trimming, weeding and planting are the primary tasks with grounds clean up needed occasionally.  All tools will be supplied.

This volunteer opportunity requires organizational skill and flexibility.  Our case managers would love to have your help in managing paperwork and receiving clients to the office.  A commitment of at least 3 months 1 3 hour shift per week is required. Hours are 10 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday.

The food pantry offers a variety of locally sourced grocery products including non-perishables, produce, meat and dairy as well as items for personal hygiene, dog and cat food, and infant supplies.

Join our team of friendly and compassionate volunteers during our pantry's Mass Distribution!

Mass Distribution happens on the LAST THURSDAY of every month and volunteers are typically expected to be there from 8:00am to 10:00am/11:30am.

WHAT IS MASS DISTRIBUTION? 

Distribution at the pantry on this day is different than usual. The last Thursday of every month we receive a large shipment of products from the Regional Food Bank (typically around 8 - 12 palettes). Anyone can come collect food regardless of whether they have already visited the pantry twice this month and we do not do intake. There are both walk up and drive-up lines which means we have a group of volunteers outside serving the cars and group inside to serve the walk-ups.

Wizard's Wardrobe is seeking a talented individual who would be interested in keeping our social media up to date - website, Facebook Page and other social media. Let your creativity flow and help us with our marketing. 

We are looking for a few people that are willing to help with various activities around the Wizard's Wardrobe. There are opportunities that range from being on a committee to helping with day to day needs such as helping to prepare snack, accompanying another adult in picking up children, as well as office work when needed.

Some of these activities would best be served if the person is willing to commit to once a week on a particular afternoon of the week.

Grassroot Givers has two CDPHP sponsored e-assisted Book Bikes. These bikes are mobile libraries that travel to schools, parks, and community events, providing free books to children and encouraging a love of reading. We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to join us as Book Bike riders. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals to engage with the community, promote literacy, and make a tangible impact on the lives of young readers. Volunteers will help ride the e-assisted bikes to their destination, distribute books, interact with children and families, and support our mission to ensure every child has access to books.
You can volunteer as an individual, a pair, or as a small group. We need riders and drivers to help drive additional books to the Book Bike visit sites. Hope 7 Food Pantry is open Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 11:45 am, every Thursday evening from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and the last Saturday of every month from 9:30 am to 11:45 am. We serve approximately 250 families, 1,300 individuals, and 11,700 meals per month. Currently, we are specifically looking for volunteers on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Volunteering will involve sorting food, putting together clients' food orders, and helping to unload weekly deliveries.

518 ElevatED's Pathways to College program is a long-term college and career prep program working with students beginning in 10th grade in  Albany, Schenectady, and Troy High schools. Students aspire to attend college but lack the financial, academic, and social resources to get there. Students are selected based on financial need and academic promise. 

A mentor is a supportive adult who serves as a role model, advocate, and coach to one college-bound high school Scholar who is participating in our Pathways to College program.

Mentors meet with their Scholars between two and four hours a month for at least one year. Mentors can stay with their Scholars through their senior year of high school.

We are looking for approximately 24 mentors to start working with students this fall. Training and a background check is required.

Help us package and deliver meals for students in Cohoes through our BackPack program! In conjunction with the Regional Food Bank, we provide qualifying students with healthy weekend meals to ensure that they are able to start school each week, ready to learn.

Volunteers will assist in packing each BackPack and then deliver the bags to the student's home in Cohoes. Other tasks that we may ask people to help with include breaking down boxes we receive and moving our overstock inventory to ensure that we are following a "first in, first out" system with the food we receive.

Assist manager with daily tasks, general upkeep of store. 

Responsibilities:

Provide empowering and supportive services to victims of domestic violence while assisting them in day-to-day efforts to stay safe. 

Willingness to learn about domestic violence issues.
Must have transportation to meet the needs of the position and a valid New York State Driver License.
New York State background check required

Provide direct service to people living outside: handing out water, food, blankets, and personal supplies, accompanied by Joseph's House staff who drive the vehicle, and address the long-term housing needs of the people served.

This opportunity is for one volunteer per 4 hours shift to support our staff as they travel in and around Albany, NY.

The van leaves the above address and runs from 12-4pm and 4-8pm, 7 days a week, year-round.

Shifts are chosen on an online calendar: you do not need to have the same availability week-to-week. You can choose how often you volunteer but suggest volunteer help at 2-4 shifts each month.

Because we have limited numbers of shifts we are accepting only people who anticipate doing this on a long-term basis out of a concern for homelessness. Unfortunately this means we are not currently accepting students doing service as part of their course or those who have mandated hours.

We will start with a phone interview so we check this is the right opportunity for you, followed by a short online application form. We will require and contact two references who can attest at your ability to be non-judgmental and confidential- and willing to engage in a friendly manner with our clients. There is an information/ orientation meeting to familiarize you with general Joseph's House policies and safety issues. At that point you will be an accepted agency volunteer. However, to be a volunteer on the van, applicants will meet with outreach staff to further describe this opportunity. Helping people staying outside can be an emotional and difficult - but extremely rewarding- task: staff will help you check this is a good opportunity for you and you can provide the support the team needs.

We are committed to continue providing services within and to our communities.   We have remained open for all crisis and basic need services and programs, while reducing group activities and programming to protect the community we serve and our workforce.  We have continued to reach out to the families and individuals who are served by our multiple clinical, counseling, and case management programs. 

Our two Emergency Food Pantries are designated by the NY State Department of Health Hunger Prevention Nutrition Assistance Program in Arbor Hill and  the South End.  As such, we are obligated to meet the needs of all who seek assistance, even those outside our catchment area.  We are the only five day a week full day food pantries in Albany.  We are receiving about double (sometimes triple) the volume of patrons with the advent of COVID-19.  In addition, we are also home delivering foodstuffs for the first time in our history.

We can work directly with volunteers to do a collection for us based on our current needs. 

Examples could be diapers, baby formula, personal hygiene supplies, cleaning supplies, toiletry items, Walmart gift cards, etc.  It could be as simple as asking friends and neighbors to leave items on your front porch, and then a volunteer can deliver the items they collect.

Upon completion, you can drop off the boxes to 15 Trinity Place, Albany, NY 12202  c/o Development Office.  Call 518-449-5155 x 134  to arrange for a contact free pick up or you may email supporttrinity@ta-cr.org to inform the agency that the items will be mailed. 

Make sure to please reach out to supporttrinity@ta-cr.org  before starting your drive to coordinate all logistics.

Thank you for your support! This volunteer opportunity will consist of either assembling our food bags that will be delivered to members of our community or supporting with day-of special functions (based on comfort level). We are responsible for re-packing 12 bulk pallets worth of food, which will then be issued to over 400 households in Albany.

Interns at The Salvation Army in Saratoga Springs receive a wide variety of experiences as our program serves a unique group of individuals that require a high level of trauma informed care. The Intern would shadow the program supervisor for the Fight for Freedom anti-human trafficking program.

Fight for Freedom Program:

A Fight for Freedom Case Manager works as a team with the client and other service providers to help receive the care and services requested by the victims/survivors. Case managers work with clients to develop a client centered case plan and work with a clinician to address the complex trauma they have endured. Fight for Freedom also hosts awareness events live and via social media campaign, outreach and conducts trainings tailored to any requesting agency/community member.

The Clerical Assistant Volunteer supports department staff with clerical needs and projects. 

Responsibilities may include: filing, shredding confidential information, data entry, preparing mailings, making phone calls, copying and other duties and/ or projects as assigned by department

Volunteer must be Comfortable in an emergency setting with a basic understanding of the stress patients and family members experience when in crisis.  Positive attitude. Ability to manage self in a setting filled with high emotion. 

The Activities Assistant assists activity staff in providing recreational activities to the residents of Ellis Center for Long Term Care.  Responsibilities include:  meeting with activity staff to review activity for the day; assisting with set-up and clean-up as needed; escorting residents to the activity; providing guidance to residents requiring assistance during the activity as directed by the Activity Director or designee; providing encouragement to residents and other duties as assigned.

We are eagerly accepting registered Pet Therapy Dogs (TDI) to provide visitation to the patients, staff and family members at Ellis Medicine!

Do you enjoy working in retail? The gift shop is open 7 days a week and can always use an extra set of hands! 

The Gift Shop volunteer provides support to the manager and assistance to the manager in the day-to-day operation of the hospital gift shop.  Responsibilities include:  greeting all patients and visitors, stocking, pricing, merchandising and other duties as assigned.

We are flexible with your hours in this role and ideally we would like you to help out for a 4 hour shift!

The ICU Volunteer supports and assists the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) staff by serving as a liaison between family members and ICU staff.  The volunteer greets all visitors to the ICU, maintains a current census of ICU patients, and facilitates answers to visitor questions regarding patient availability for visits and physician and staff accessibility.  In this role, the volunteer also provides emotional/spiritual support to family members/visitors in the ICU waiting room.  

- Assist with answering incoming phone calls and directly phone calls

- Round on patients, providing friendly visits 

- Assisting with Meal tray set up

- Assisting with inventory on units

Volunteers at the Shaker Heritage Society have a variety of roles and work all sorts of hours. Throughout the year, we're in need of assistance in our Education department, with research and organizational roles. In spring, summer, and fall, we need volunteers to work in our Museum Shop behind the register and as greeters, as well as assist with special events like our Summer and Harvest Craft Fairs, as well as our popular Holiday Market between October and December.

Inspired by the Shakers' motto, "hands to work, hearts to god," we created our Hands to Work Days as a way to emulate the Shakers' belief in integrity in their labor as well as their worship. Hands to Work Days are an opportunity for the community to gather and assist us in beautifying our site. From mopping and dusting our historic Meeting Room to raking leaves and clearing branches throughout our site, we would be glad to have your help.

And if you love to tell stories, we are revamping our docent program and are looking for folks interested in learning all about our site and its history and sharing it with our visitors.

Unity House is a Rensselaer County-based human service agency that provides a wide range of services to meet the otherwise unmet needs of people in our community who are hurting struggling. They assist those who are living in poverty, adults living with mental illness or HIV/AIDS, victims of domestic violence, and children with developmental delays. Some of their programs consist of providing: Food Pantry Assistance, Meals-on-site, ReStyle Store, A Child’s Place, Domestic Violence Shelter, and much more.

Project Description:

We are ALWAYS in need of the following items: socks and underwear for all ages, toiletries like soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, lotion, sunscreen, toothbrushes, hairbrushes, and more. CLEANING SUPPLIES like dish soap, sponges, clothing detergent are always needed too!    You can also help by collecting Food Pantry items such as soup, canned tuna, cereal, and other non-perishable items.  We are seeking as many items as can be provided. Thank you!

Mentors will be matched with a child, ages 7-17, who is living in a challenging home environment. Mentors meet with their mentees once a week for approximately 2 hours. Together they do a variety of educational, fun and enriching activities. Mentors can make a profound difference in the life of a child! Studies show that youth with a mentor have more positive outcomes in school and in the workplace. In order to develop trust and consistency, a 1 year commitment is required. Mentors are screened and trained before working with a child.

The Joan Nicole Prince Home is a comfort home located in Scotia that houses terminally ill residents. Our mission is to provide a safe and comfortable environment for the terminally ill during their final days. 

We are a 501 (c) (3) recognized nonprofit and rely 100% on grants and donations from the community. The JNPH is not state-funded, nor do we receive reimbursements from Health Insurance. 

The JNPH has served over 230 residents since opening its doors in 2006. Residents are terminally ill with a prognosis of three months, require a DNR order, and are on Hospice Service. Residents stay here free of charge and are cared for by 3 staff members and countless volunteers who provide meals, medications, and most importantly, love and respect. 

We invite the community to come out on 518 Day to maintain our garden! This includes raking, weeding, planting flowers, and mulching. If anyone wants to come into the home to clean, they are welcome as well.

Each of our PATH Intl. Therapeutic Riding Lessons utilize three volunteers to provide.  Our programs are expanding and we need volunteers to help with our expansion.  

To work with clients in equine-assisted PATH lessons you should be able to:

1) Walk or jog for short distances
2) Hold your arm above your shoulder height and support a modest weight

Side Walkers: (Training is provided)

The Side Walker’s primary role is to walk alongside the rider and provide support as indicated by the instructor. It may be direct physical support, verbal support to reinforce the instructor’s directions, or acting as spotters during sessions. One or two side walkers may be assigned to each rider depending on the rider’s needs.

Lead Walker: (Training is provided)

Generally, a volunteer comes to the program with some horse knowledge and who feels comfortable leading a horse. Lead walkers are
primarily responsible for the horse and must be aware of the horse’s movement and behavior at all times.

Jewish Family Services delivers kosher meals to seniors who are no longer able to cook for themselves.  We deliver in Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer and Saratoga Counties.  Most routes have between 4 and 7 stops and can be completed in 1.25 hours or less. All meals are delivered hot, so must be delivered immediately following pick up from the Albany JCC on Whitehall Road to maintain the correct temperature.  We are currently seeking volunteers who are willing to deliver to Schenectady County, Town of Colonie and Troy.  Must have your own vehicle and able to drive.  Pick up from the JCC is between 11am-11:30am.  Background check is required by JFS.  Looking for permanent drivers as well as substitutes.  Please email Lgally@JFSNENY.org, call or text 518-516-1107.  I look forward to hearing from you!

-Exterior Firefighter- 18 or older; NYS Basic Exterior Ops and in house training

-Service Loan- maintain membership in your home fire department while studying or working in the area

Your presence can help reassure those we serve that they are remembered by the community, and cared for by society at a time of great need.

Volunteers help our staff serve the prepared dinner for our guests and tenants, and provide a friendly face and kindness.

This opportunity requires you to be available from 4:40pm to 6:15pm any day of the week. Our buildings are all staffed 24/7 but with fewer staff at that dinner hour,  your help allows staff to deal with client needs, the front doors and phones, while you help and chat with those we serve.

Sign-up is by an online calendar or app, and you do not need to be available every week on the same day, We do suggest you aim to serve at least twice each month so you are familiar with the task and can work independently.

Camp Scully needs to construct simple changing areas for its campers to be able to change clothes with privacy from other campers. A simple plywood and 2x4 cubicle construction has been planned out. Camp Scully is looking for someone to help build these cubicles. Materials and tools will be provided. Some knowledge of using power tools and simple construction techniques are necessary.
