The Baby Institute is seeking dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to support our Summer Literacy Camp by assisting classroom teachers with literacy-based activities, hands-on projects, and age-appropriate crafts. Classroom Aides will also work one-on-one and in small groups with 4- and 5-year-old children to build early reading, writing, and social skills that prepare them for a successful transition into school. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy mentoring young learners and contributing to a positive, supportive classroom environment.

Volunteers will lead story time, sing-alongs, simple crafts, and hands-on learning experiences that promote early literacy and social development. The Albany Public Library is looking for interested individuals to help out during our programs and events. The Library has a wide variety of programs, and sometimes we need some extra help setting up, interacting with patrons, and cleaning the space up when we're done. 

Qualifications:

The specifics of each volunteer opportunity will depend on the specific program or event at which you are offering help. However, responsibilities may include opening the door for patrons; helping set up chairs or helping a patron find a seat; assisting a young patron working through a craft step; acting as an extra set of hands & eyes during larger programs; putting away tables, chairs, and materials at the end of an event; and much more! The Albany Public Library is looking for interested individuals to help bring Bleecker the Library Owl to life.

During special programs and events, Bleecker makes an appearance. However, Bleecker needs a talented actor to bring them to life! This volunteer would wear the Bleecker mascot suit and attend special programs like Growing Readers events, certain story times, and more. These events may be outside or inside a library branch, though there will always be support to help keep the actor cool, calm, and collected.

Qualifications:

Safety Note: Bleecker's mascot suit does come with cooling vests, which can be worn if the performer needs additional heating regulation. There will also be a staff member present to keep an eye on Bleecker's actor, so they remain safe while performing.

Volunteering as a Digital Navigator Assistant is a great way to help people by answering questions about computers, mobile devices, e-mail accounts, websites or word documents, resume formatting or cover letter printing, and many other things. A successful volunteer will be someone who is patient and comfortable working with technological confusion. We ask that you help guide library patrons towards being informed digital citizens. While the Library can connect users to the infinity of the Internet, we need community members to help connect users with authentic and relevant information about technology. 

Digital Navigator positions are open at the Howe Branch (105 Schuyler St), Pine Hills Branch (517 Western Ave), and Washington Avenue Branch (161 Wash Ave).

The Emma-Treadwell Thacher Nature Center is home to multiple education ambassadors, including two snakes, three turtle, a lizard, stick bugs, hissing cockroaches, and a few fish! The Nature Center staff performs most of the animal care themselves, but is always happy to accept help from volunteers. Animal care is performed primarily on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and takes roughly an hour altogether. This care includes feeding, humidity control, general cleaning, and handling. If you'd like to learn the routine to lend a hand, feel free to reach out and we can set up some brief training!

Caregiving volunteers help the staff provide direct resident care. No experience is necessary and training/shadowing is provided. There will ALWAYS be a staff person present with whom you'll work. Activities may include sitting at a resident's bedside and visiting, interacting with a resident's family, friends, and caregivers, light cooking, helping to feed a resident or refreshing their snacks/beverages, helping give the resident a bed bath, with toileting, or helping to change a resident's soiled clothes, 'attends', and bed linens, and organizing a resident's belongings. Volunteers also provide light housekeeping, stocking/inventory, laundry, and office support as needed. Volunteers must be 18 years of age, be able to stand, walk, navigate stairs, and carry 20 lbs.

Community Educators are volunteer public speakers who help the Alzheimer's Association provide consumer education.  These volunteers deliver prepared presentations on topics related to Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, as well as brain health.

Helping Grassroot Givers as a Front End Support volunteer is a meaningful way to connect with our community while ensuring dignity and kindness for those we serve.

Volunteers read to elementary students once a week during their lunch. Mentors meet weekly with children in Troy, Rensselaer and Cohoes schools. This program helps children develop a love of reading and strengthens their success in school. Program runs during the school year. Come tutor with us!! We hold 4 two-day training sessions a school year -- September, October, November and January. Most sessions occur on two consecutive Saturdays from 8:45 AM to 4:00 PM. New this year! Weekday training sessions will be offered on Monday, October 13 and Friday, October 24, 2025.

The two-day training includes learning how racism and poverty affect our students and the tutors on the first day, and  brain development, the 5 components of reading, writing, and lesson planning on the second day.

The Veterans & Community Housing Coalition has been selected by the NYS Office of Mental Health’s Suicide Prevention Center (SPCNY) to participate in a powerful initiative: the Onward Ops program, funded through the CARES UP Grant. Schenectady Greenmarket is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Volunteer Administrative Assistant to support the Executive Director (ED) and Board of Directors with key administrative and logistical tasks. This role is critical to ensuring the smooth operation of our programs, events, and organizational priorities, directly contributing to the market's success and its mission to connect farm and city.

Key Responsibilities:

Project Management Support:

Support ED in creating project plans/timelines based on outcomes/action items from board or committee meetings.

Support ED in managing assignment of tasks from meeting notes and/or project plans/timelines including sending reminder emails to project collaborators on assigned tasks and scheduling followup calls as needed.

Support ED in ensuring unassigned tasks are completed

Fundraising and Event Support:

Assist with the market’s annual appeal and fundraising events, including logistics and communications.

Wizard's Wardrobe is looking for one or two volunteers to drive a 12-passenger van to pick up elementary students at three schools in Albany and then transport them to the Wizard's Wardrobe:

- Henry Johnson Charter School and Brighter Choice Charter School at 3:30 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays; and

- Albany School of Humanities (ASH) at 2:30 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

No special license is needed. Volunteers need to provide a valid driver's license with a clean driving record and proof of auto insurance as well as pass background and reference checks.

Athletic Haven has many projects that could use a clerical eye. Including, but not limited to, data entry, filing, letter writing and organizational tasks.

Athletic Haven is a volunteer-based non-profit organization created to support youth athletes in New York’s Capital Region. Founded in 2016 by area coach Scott McIntyre, the organization offers low-cost camps, open gyms, coaching and training opportunities.

Through its Awareness Athletics program, it also provides opportunities for youth athletes to participate in area travel teams. In exchange, participants are expected to pay-it-forward and raise funds for local charities.  

Our mission is to provide a philanthropic outlet through community events and athletics to help meet the financial and emotional needs of aspiring young student-athletes.

Athletic Haven has also established the tsm Fund and grants scholarships annually to athletes who display outstanding sportsmanship in memory of McIntyre’s son, Tyler, who passed away in 2012.

The Wizard’s Wardrobe is a free one-on-one, after-school tutoring program for  elementary students in the South End of Albany. Our focus is on reading and writing skills, along with problem solving, which is nurtured with our monthly STEM challenges. These challenges help build perseverance and grit and encourage risk-taking.

Our trained volunteer tutors welcome the children into a safe space, with an imaginative theme. Our library has over 2,700 books in order for tutors to help students find ones of interest on their reading level, as well as books that tutors can read to them to increase their listening vocabularies.

Once accepted into the program, students are welcome to continue through elementary school. We work to complement and enhance their experiences in school to raise their academic standings.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who loves children, has a can-do attitude and is ready to strengthen a young student’s possibilities.

As one tutor said of her student, “my job is to help her believe in herself and what she can accomplish.”

Tutors must complete a two-day training before being assigned a student. Our last training for the 2024-25 school year will be Jan. 11 & 18, 2025.

We ask tutors to make a commitment for a full school year. Building a relationship with the student is of primary importance. It is this relationship that research tells us allows the student to make great progress. Many of our tutors have worked with their students for several years.

Currently we have a waiting list of students. We need tutors in order to enroll students. Your volunteering with us is essential. Students come twice a week for one and a half hours each time. Tutors commit to one or two afternoons a week. If twice, the student will have only that one tutor.  If once, the tutor will share the student with another tutor. Tutors participate in a 15-hour training course.

Our children come at various times, depending on which school they attend. The program is open from 1:00 - 5:30 PM, Monday-Thursday with 2 tutoring slots (2:45-4:15; 3:45-5:15). It is also open on Friday, 2:00-5:30.

Conversation Club provides opportunities for refugees and immigrants to practice their conversation skills.  It is a drop-in neighborhood session open to the public.  Conversation starters are provided for volunteers to break up into smaller groups to facilitate discussion.  It is a low-stress, fun way to meet our new neighbors.  

RISSE offers 4 levels of  English as a New Language instruction to adult refugees and immigrants.  In-person volunteers provide one-on-one or small group tutoring to adult students.  Online training is provided and required.  Volunteer as little as one hour a week.  RISSE requests a 3 month minimum volunteer commitment.

Classes meet mornings and afternoons; various volunteer times are available.

Do you enjoy working outdoors? RISSE needs help maintaining plantings and gardens around the property.  Mowing, trimming, weeding and planting are the primary tasks with grounds clean up needed occasionally.  All tools will be supplied.

This volunteer opportunity requires organizational skill and flexibility.  Our case managers would love to have your help in managing paperwork and receiving clients to the office.  A commitment of at least 3 months 1 3 hour shift per week is required. Grassroot Givers has two CDPHP sponsored e-assisted Book Bikes. These bikes are mobile libraries that travel to schools, parks, and community events, providing free books to children and encouraging a love of reading. We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to join us as Book Bike riders. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals to engage with the community, promote literacy, and make a tangible impact on the lives of young readers. Volunteers will help ride the e-assisted bikes to their destination, distribute books, interact with children and families, and support our mission to ensure every child has access to books.

Are you looking to make a positive impact on the lives of local families in need? Hope 7 Food Pantry is open Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 11:45 am, every Thursday evening from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and the last Saturday of every month from 9:30 am to 11:45 am. We serve approximately 250 families, 1,300 individuals, and 11,700 meals per month. Currently, we are specifically looking for volunteers on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Volunteering will involve sorting food, putting together clients' food orders, and helping to unload weekly deliveries.

518 ElevatED's Pathways to College program is a long-term college and career prep program working with students beginning in 10th grade in  Albany, Schenectady, and Troy High schools. Students aspire to attend college but lack the financial, academic, and social resources to get there. Students are selected based on financial need and academic promise. 

A mentor is a supportive adult who serves as a role model, advocate, and coach to one college-bound high school Scholar who is participating in our Pathways to College program.

Mentors meet with their Scholars between two and four hours a month for at least one year. Mentors can stay with their Scholars through their senior year of high school.

We are looking for approximately 24 mentors to start working with students this fall. Training and a background check is required.

Volunteer Virtually for Service to the Armed Forces as a Red Cross Caseworker!

The American Red Cross has a long history of providing support and services to the Armed Forces. Our volunteers and staff help active members of the military, veterans, and their families cope with the challenges of military service. YOU can help us provide that support. *This is a volunteer role, not a paid position.

VOLUNTEER TITLE: Service to Armed Forces Caseworker

DUTIES:

Conduct follow-up phone calls to military family members, veterans and active-duty military members to ensure excellent support.

Interview those who need assistance and file reports in a Red Cross software system.

Work individually and on a casework team to provide the best support and referrals.

TIME COMMITMENT:

Time commitment is coordinated with our Volunteer Casework Lead. Hours are flexible, but an overall commitment of 5-10 hours is preferred each week.

REQUIRED SKILLS & CERTIFICATIONS:

Training specific to the American Red Cross Service to Armed Forces is provided and required.

*This volunteer role is for someone with excellent interpersonal skills, who can convey warmth and respect for human dignity.
