Come help build a food forest in Albany!
We had an amazing tree planting on Saturday the 16th where we planted 25 apples, pears, hickories, black walnuts and paw paws!
Now, on Sunday, May 1st, the Radix Center will be having its second spring volunteer food tree planting event where we will be planting 25 more trees in the blocks surrounding the Center. Species for this round include juneberry, hawthorne, filbert, cornelian cherry, edible oak, mountain ash, and persimmons! The food grown on these public trees will be available for free to local residents.
These plantings are being undertaken with the guidance and support of the City of Albany.
If you are interested in participating, please arrive at the Radix Center (153 Grand Street) at 10 AM for a tree planting training and demonstration. We will continue working until 2PM or until all the trees have been planted.
This planting is part of the South End Biocultural Diversity Forest program, a Radix program funded by the NYSDEC Community and Urban Forestry program and by a HUD Community Block Development Grant. By planting more trees in the neighborhood at no cost to residents, we hope to address systemic inequality, reduce urban heat island temperatures, improve air quality, increase local food sovereignty, enhance biodiversity, and bolster the resilience of Albany's urban forest.
We have been busily cutting up sidewalks to make new tree pits - pushing back on the urban heat island!
If you are interested in attending the planting, or for more information, please send a confirmation email to Scott Kellogg at sk@radixcenter.org
Thank you!
