Programs and activities are a huge part of the Albany Public Library and our service to the community. It takes a lot of tools, materials, and planning for the librarians to share a variety of programs focused on science, art, history, literature, personal development, entertainment, and so much more. Each neighborhood library branch does its best to provide engaging and meaningful experiences to its patrons. 

All of the tools and resources that librarians use to share programs are stored in supply closets at the libraries. These storage areas can become quite full of wacky toys, multi-use craft materials, art supplies, science experiments, and who knows what else. The Albany Public Library is looking for an interested volunteer to help us organize these closets and generate a list of the stocked items. The volunteer(s) would work alongside the Volunteer Coordinator to develop an inventory and organize the items. 

A successful volunteer will be someone who enjoys organizing, recording items in a spreadsheet, and working with others. If you or someone you know is interested in helping out, respond to this volunteer opportunity and a library staff member will be in contact with you about the next steps. 

Albany Public Library is looking for interested individuals who can help bring technological guidance to our patrons. The Library values access to technology; many patrons use computers, borrow hotspots, or connect to our Wi-Fi via their personal devices. Sometimes technology can be complicated or confusing for people to navigate, and they need extra guidance or support.

The Library is looking for individuals interested in volunteering for 2 months (about 35-50 hours) or for 4 months (about 60-150 hours).

Volunteering as a Digital Navigator Assistant is a great way to help people by answering questions about computers, mobile devices, e-mail accounts, websites or word documents, resume formatting or cover letter printing, and many other things. A successful volunteer will be someone who is patient and comfortable working with technological confusion. APL is asking for volunteers to help guide library patrons towards being informed digital citizens. While the Library can connect users to the infinity of the Internet, we need community members to help connect users with authentic and relevant information about technology and the Internet. 

Often, college students volunteer as Digital Navigator Assistants to earn experiential learning credit or community service hours. The Albany Public Library is happy to work with universities to provide this opportunity to students. APL offers short term and long term volunteer positions depending on the amount of credit hours required for one's associated college course.

Volunteers (age 18+, or minors with an adult) help organize items, distribute food, run food or supplies during distribution or assist in ongoing cleanup:cardboard management during distribution. Distribution begins at 6 PM and goes until every friend is served (completion time varies each week but is generally complete by 8 pm).

Helping Grassroot Givers as a Front End Support volunteer is a meaningful way to connect with our community while ensuring dignity and kindness for those we serve.

Volunteers read to elementary students once a week during their lunch. Mentors meet weekly with children in Troy, Rensselaer and Cohoes schools. This program helps children develop a love of reading and strengthens their success in school. Program runs during the school year. Come tutor with us!! We hold 4 two-day training sessions a school year -- September, October, November and January. Most sessions occur on two consecutive Saturdays from 8:45 AM to 4:00 PM. New this year! Weekday training sessions will be offered on Monday, October 13 and Friday, October 24, 2025.

2025-26 training dates are:

September 13 and 20, 2025 (Saturdays)

October 13 (Monday) and 24 (Friday), 2025

November 8 and 15, 2025 (Saturdays)

January 10 and 17, 2026 (Saturdays)

The two-day training includes learning how racism and poverty affect our students and the tutors on the first day, and  brain development, the 5 components of reading, writing, and lesson planning on the second day. 

Once trained, you will work with one student for the school year, building a trusting relationship that helps the student believe in themselves and dare to risk on the journey to learning.

Volunteers must pass background and reference checks.

Junior Achievement brings quality volunteers from the community into a classroom to deliver proven, hands-on programming on financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship. JA inspires and prepares young people with the real-life competencies they need to succeed.

One volunteer is assigned a classroom at an elementary grade level for 5 classroom visits of 45 minutes each. Materials provided. The volunteer works out their schedule with the teacher. All volunteer experiences take place during the school day. Virtual training is provided. It is 1/2 hour. Dates and times of training are discussed with Loriann Kondracki - Resource Manager for K-5 programs.

Transportation is needed.

The Albany Public Library is looking for interested individuals to help out during our programs and events. The Library has a wide variety of programs, and sometimes we need some extra help setting up, interacting with patrons, and cleaning the space up when we're done. 

Qualifications:

The specifics of each volunteer opportunity will depend on the specific program or event at which you are offering help. However, responsibilities may include opening the door for patrons; helping set up chairs or helping a patron find a seat; assisting a young patron working through a craft step; act as an extra set of helping hands & eyes during larger programs; putting away tables, chairs, and materials at the end of an event; and many more! The Albany Public Library is looking for interested individuals to help bring Bleecker the Owl to life. During special programs and events, Bleecker makes an appearance. However, Bleecker needs a talented actor to bring them to life! This volunteer would wear the Bleecker mascot suit and attend special programs like Growing Readers events, certain story times, and more. These events may be outside or inside the Library, though there will always be support to help keep the actor cool, calm, and collected.

Qualifications:

Safety Note: Bleecker's mascot suit does come with cooling vests, which can be worn if the performer needs additional heating regulation. There will also be a staff member present to keep an eye on Bleecker's actor so they remain safe while performing.

Calling all Albany County high school students looking for volunteer opportunities to meet graduation requirements. We are looking for students who are interested in the environment field and how they can actively improve it. This volunteer opportunity will give students the tools and knowledge to further pursue a career in conservation. Some of the skills students will develop include plant identification, invasive species removal, principles of ecology, environmental planning and so much more.

The Veterans & Community Housing Coalition has been selected by the NYS Office of Mental Health’s Suicide Prevention Center (SPCNY) to participate in a powerful initiative: the Onward Ops program, funded through the CARES UP Grant. Saratoga Joinery, a community woodworking shop in downtown Saratoga Springs, is looking for help managing our social media channels! Schenectady Greenmarket is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Volunteer Administrative Assistant to support the Executive Director (ED) and Board of Directors with key administrative and logistical tasks. This role is critical to ensuring the smooth operation of our programs, events, and organizational priorities, directly contributing to the market's success and its mission to connect farm and city.

Key Responsibilities:

Project Management Support:

Support ED in creating project plans/timelines based on outcomes/action items from board or committee meetings.

Support ED in managing assignment of tasks from meeting notes and/or project plans/timelines including sending reminder emails to project collaborators on assigned tasks and scheduling followup calls as needed.

Support ED in ensuring unassigned tasks are completed

Fundraising and Event Support:

Assist with the market’s annual appeal and fundraising events, including logistics and communications.

Support Board Members with donor stewardship by working with ED to update and/or prepare communication scripts for engaging with funders and helping to ensure our donor database is up to date.

Research and assist in transitioning the market to a new donor database platform.

Board Development Assistance:

Schedule reminders for board meetings and send Zoom invitations.

Grant and Sponsorship Support:

Support ED in completing grant reports.

Support ED in applying for sponsorships and small grants and/or assist ED in supporting board members to complete applications including providing necessary guidance and documentation to write and submit a strong application.

Market Administration:

Support tracking and managing vendor compliance documents via email, mail, and Manage My Market.

Handle Farmers Market Nutrition Program and Fresh Connect Coupon counting, reporting, and reimbursement submissions, including required reporting to the Department of Agriculture and Markets.

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong organizational and time management skills.

Ability to work independently and take initiative.

Experience with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, or similar tools.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Familiarity with nonprofit operations, fundraising, or grant reporting is a plus.

Time Commitment:
Flexible hours, approximately 5–10 hours per week, depending on organizational needs and availability. Willing to work with one or two volunteers so work hours could potentially be split between 2 people.

Wizard's Wardrobe is looking for one or two volunteers to drive a 12-passenger van to pick up elementary students at three schools in Albany and then transport them to the Wizard's Wardrobe:

- Henry Johnson Charter School and Brighter Choice Charter School at 3:30 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays; and

- Albany School of Humanities (ASH) at 2:30 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

No special license is needed. Volunteers need to provide a valid driver's license with a clean driving record and proof of auto insurance as well as pass background and reference checks. 

Help adults pass their GED (General Educational Development) Test! Work one on one or in small groups with students who need additional assistance in specific areas of the GED Test (most commonly math skills and reading comprehension). Teacher will provide guidance and activities as needed.

Volunteer with adults who are learning English! We are looking for individuals who are interested in helping beginning English Language Learners with the basics of the language or who would like to engage English Language Learners of all levels in conversation. Classroom teachers will provide guidance and topics as needed. 

Travel to each venue 1x/month and inventory equipment and update sheet as well report any equipment that needs to be fixed/replaced.

Athletic Haven has many projects that could use a clerical eye. Including, but not limited to, data entry, filing, letter writing and organizational tasks.

Athletic Haven is a volunteer-based non-profit organization created to support youth athletes in New York’s Capital Region. Founded in 2016 by area coach Scott McIntyre, the organization offers low-cost camps, open gyms, coaching and training opportunities.

Through its Awareness Athletics program, it also provides opportunities for youth athletes to participate in area travel teams. In exchange, participants are expected to pay-it-forward and raise funds for local charities.  

Our mission is to provide a philanthropic outlet through community events and athletics to help meet the financial and emotional needs of aspiring young student-athletes.

Athletic Haven has also established the tsm Fund and grants scholarships annually to athletes who display outstanding sportsmanship in memory of McIntyre’s son, Tyler, who passed away in 2012.

It’s our duty to do our diligence and find out the facts! We support many campaigns in the capital region but we are also building our own. Help our team do the research on social justice, food insecurity, restorative justice and more.

The Volunteer Data Research Assistant will play a crucial role in supporting our nonprofit’s mission by assisting with data collection, analysis, and reporting. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about data, research, and making a positive impact in the community.

**Key Responsibilities:**
- Assist in the collection and organization of data relevant to the organization’s projects and initiatives.
- Conduct literature reviews and summarize findings on relevant topics.
- Analyze data using statistical software and tools.
- Prepare reports and visual presentations of data findings for internal and external stakeholders.
- Collaborate with team members to identify research needs and develop methodologies.
- Maintain accurate records of research activities and findings.

The Wizard’s Wardrobe is a free one-on-one, after-school tutoring program for  elementary students in the South End of Albany. Our focus is on reading and writing skills, along with problem solving, which is nurtured with our monthly STEM challenges. These challenges help build perseverance and grit and encourage risk-taking.

Our trained volunteer tutors welcome the children into a safe space, with an imaginative theme. Our library has over 2,700 books in order for tutors to help students find ones of interest on their reading level, as well as books that tutors can read to them to increase their listening vocabularies.

Once accepted into the program, students are welcome to continue through elementary school. We work to complement and enhance their experiences in school to raise their academic standings.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who loves children, has a can-do attitude and is ready to strengthen a young student’s possibilities.

As one tutor said of her student, “my job is to help her believe in herself and what she can accomplish.”

Tutors must complete a two-day training before being assigned a student. Our last training for the 2024-25 school year will be Jan. 11 & 18, 2025.

We ask tutors to make a commitment for a full school year. Building a relationship with the student is of primary importance. It is this relationship that research tells us allows the student to make great progress. Many of our tutors have worked with their students for several years.

Currently we have a waiting list of students. We need tutors in order to enroll students. Your volunteering with us is essential. Students come twice a week for one and a half hours each time. Tutors commit to one or two afternoons a week. If twice, the student will have only that one tutor.  If once, the tutor will share the student with another tutor. Tutors participate in a 15-hour training course.

Our children come at various times, depending on which school they attend. The program is open from 1:00 - 5:30 PM, Monday-Thursday with 2 tutoring slots (2:45-4:15; 3:45-5:15). It is also open on Friday, 2:00-5:30.

Requirements

▪ Have transportation and availability on one of the following days:

Tuesday: 10:30 am - 12: 00 pm

Thursday: 10:30 am - 12:00 pm or 12:00 pm - 1:00pm

▪ Volunteers are not required to have teaching experience.
▪ Knowing another language would be helpful but not required. Our neighbors speak Pashto, Dari, Burmese, Karen, Turkish, Spanish, French, and other languages.
▪ Volunteers should be committed, reliable, and punctual.

There are two available Friday shifts for interested BackPack volunteers:
From 7:30 to 8:30 am, we package dry goods and produce
From 8:30 to 9:00 am, volunteer drivers deliver a route of 3-5 BackPacks to homes in Cohoes (Vehicle needed)

There is one available Wednesday shift for interested BackPack volunteers:
From 7:30 to 9:30 am, Volunteers will meet the backpack coordinator at the Regional Food Bank in Latham, NY, pack up their vehicle with dry goods and produce, and unload at the Connect Center.

Volunteers for this shift must have a vehicle.

Conversation Club provides opportunities for refugees and immigrants to practice their conversation skills.  It is a drop-in neighborhood session open to the public.  Conversation starters are provided for volunteers to break up into smaller groups to facilitate discussion.  It is a low-stress, fun way to meet our new neighbors.  

RISSE offers 4 levels of  English as a New Language instruction to adult refugees and immigrants.  In-person volunteers provide one-on-one or small group tutoring to adult students.  Online training is provided and required.  Volunteer as little as one hour a week.  RISSE requests a 3 month minimum volunteer commitment.

Classes meet mornings and afternoons; various volunteer times are available.

Do you enjoy working outdoors? RISSE needs help maintaining plantings and gardens around the property.  Mowing, trimming, weeding and planting are the primary tasks with grounds clean up needed occasionally.  All tools will be supplied.

This volunteer opportunity requires organizational skill and flexibility.  Our case managers would love to have your help in managing paperwork and receiving clients to the office.  A commitment of at least 3 months 1 3 hour shift per week is required. Hours are 10 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday.

Sycamore Collaborative's Food Pantry is the largest food pantry in Schenectady County, serving over 600,000 meals each year to its residents experiencing food insecurity. The food pantry offers a variety of locally sourced grocery products including non-perishables, produce, meat and dairy as well as items for personal hygiene, dog and cat food, and infant supplies.

Join our team of friendly and compassionate volunteers during our pantry's Mass Distribution!

Mass Distribution happens on the LAST THURSDAY of every month and volunteers are typically expected to be there from 8:00am to 10:00am/11:30am.

WHAT IS MASS DISTRIBUTION? 

Distribution at the pantry on this day is different than usual. The last Thursday of every month we receive a large shipment of products from the Regional Food Bank (typically around 8 - 12 palettes). Anyone can come collect food regardless of whether they have already visited the pantry twice this month and we do not do intake. There are both walk up and drive-up lines which means we have a group of volunteers outside serving the cars and group inside to serve the walk-ups.

Are you passionate about the outdoors? We are in search of a dedicated volunteer to assist with our grounds maintenance duties. Your responsibilities will include mowing, trimming, weeding, fertilizing plants, picking up trash, and watering.

We are looking for a dedicated volunteer to help with interior cleaning duties at our facility. Responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, cleaning surfaces in the public dining area and restrooms, window washing, and vacuuming.

Familiarity with cleaning procedures and equipment.

The Wizard’s Wardrobe is a free one-on-one, after-school tutoring program for  elementary students in the South End of Albany. Our focus is on reading and writing skills, along with problem solving, which is nurtured with our monthly STEM challenges. These challenges help build perseverance and grit and encourage risk-taking.

Our trained volunteer tutors welcome the children into a safe space, with an imaginative theme. Our library has over 2,500 books in order for tutors to help students find ones of interest on their reading level, as well as books that tutors can read to them to increase their listening vocabularies.

Once accepted into the program, students are welcome to continue through elementary school. We work to complement and enhance their experiences in school to raise their academic standings.

Wizard's Wardrobe is seeking a talented individual who would be interested in keeping our social media up to date - website, Facebook Page and other social media. Let your creativity flow and help us with our marketing. 

We are looking for a few people that are willing to help with various activities around the Wizard's Wardrobe. There are opportunities that range from being on a committee to helping with day to day needs such as helping to prepare snack, accompanying another adult in picking up children, as well as office work when needed.

Some of these activities would best be served if the person is willing to commit to once a week on a particular afternoon of the week.

Sycamore Collaborative’s Schenectady Urban Farms program has three community-supported urban farms across two acres in the city of Schenectady. The community collaborates in cultivating fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs while also tending to honeybees and egg-laying chickens.

Schenectady Urban Farms provides fresh and healthy produce for anyone joining the work. We encourage the community to join as members, providing 2 hours of volunteer time on the farm each week during the growing season.

Grassroot Givers has two CDPHP sponsored e-assisted Book Bikes. These bikes are mobile libraries that travel to schools, parks, and community events, providing free books to children and encouraging a love of reading. We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to join us as Book Bike riders. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals to engage with the community, promote literacy, and make a tangible impact on the lives of young readers. Volunteers will help ride the e-assisted bikes to their destination, distribute books, interact with children and families, and support our mission to ensure every child has access to books.
You can volunteer as an individual, a pair, or as a small group. We need riders and drivers to help drive additional books to the Book Bike visit sites. Are you looking to make a positive impact on the lives of local families in need? Hope 7 Food Pantry is open Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 11:45 am, every Thursday evening from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and the last Saturday of every month from 9:30 am to 11:45 am. We serve approximately 250 families, 1,300 individuals, and 11,700 meals per month. Currently, we are specifically looking for volunteers on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Volunteering will involve sorting food, putting together clients' food orders, and helping to unload weekly deliveries.

518 ElevatED's Pathways to College program is a long-term college and career prep program working with students beginning in 10th grade in  Albany, Schenectady, and Troy High schools. Students aspire to attend college but lack the financial, academic, and social resources to get there. Students are selected based on financial need and academic promise. 

A mentor is a supportive adult who serves as a role model, advocate, and coach to one college-bound high school Scholar who is participating in our Pathways to College program.

Mentors meet with their Scholars between two and four hours a month for at least one year. Mentors can stay with their Scholars through their senior year of high school.

We are looking for approximately 24 mentors to start working with students this fall. Training and a background check is required.
